This discussion moved off-list, and so I just figured I should report here
(for anyone browsing the archives who might also have this bug) that we
found the bug.  I was creating joinable threads rather than detached
threads, and Peter's system was running into its PTHREADS_MAX_THREADS
limit.  The fix is now in the abridgegame.org repo, and will be in 0.9.7.
