Unfortunately in some sense, that's never failed: it's always found 
libcurl at configure time and built the binary just fine. However, when 
I attempt to use the resulting darcs to get the latest, I get the 
runtime error from darcs saying that no curl was found.

Nevertheless, I will try plan B and let you know how it goes.
