You should do `darcs setpref boringfile <my_boringfile>'.
That will make darcs both use this file instead of
_darcs/prefs/boring, and propagate this setting to other repos
(in a special changepref patch).  And, of course, also add the
<my_boringfile> to the repo, so it is under version control.
