Without endorsing the idea yet, I would prefer that the UI be:
darcs record --filetype= ...
'type' on it's own is not very descriptive, and I'm not sure it merits
a top level command.

From a particular users perspective, this is a cool feature. Looking a
large set if users, this is essentially adding a way to easily create
incompatible repos. You would have projects advertising: "To download
this code, you need darcs with the X, Y and Z patch types installed".
That's my fear anyway.
