This could be fixed by having

20040713031237-3fd76-718fe2554dedce9a591218992909cf386924bcbe.gz

be

718/fe2/20040713031237-3fd76-718fe2554dedce9a591218992909cf386924bcbe.gz

or similar (there is obviously scope for argument over how many
characters to use and whether they should be deleted from the filename).

If such a change is to be made to the repo format, I would like to
propose taking the opportunity to also rename foo.gz to foo.dp (darcs
patch - or some other name if you prefer). As it would still be the same
name regardless of whether it is compressed, and not a standard
file extension, I think it should still satisfy what I remember of your
(David's) criteria from a thread a little while ago. However, it
wouldn't feel so wrong as having uncompressed data in a .gz file, and
apache giving a "Content-Encoding: x-gzip" for uncompressed files
worries me (I'm not sure what his conclusion was, but I got the
impression it might have made firefly's libwww hacking harder than it
need have been).

Thanks
Ian, wondering if I should have replied to the devel list instead
