I'm not 100% sure but I think this is what happens in the normal
annoying case. (I'm lucky I'm using ssh-agent, so I don't have to be
annoyed.)
In fact, when I turn off ssh-agent and do a darcs get, I can see it
creating files on my local disk while it repeatedly asks me for my
password.
You could try typing your password many times and see if that does
anything while doing an ls -l in another wind. Or try setting up one
of the other solutions described in the FAQ.
