Are the repositories in question identical?  If not, could you make a
copy of the remote repository (for example a tarball), putting it on the
local machine, and then try pulling from there?  I just want to make
sure that this really is the conflict misery bug and not just something
network related.

If you could pull using the -v switch, it would be interested to see
where it hangs.
