I often find myself doing this manually by getting a fresh repo that's the 
intersection of the current state of the local repo and the current state 
of the remote repo (do a get of some old tag that's in both, then pull 
--intersection), then tag that, then pull the tag into the local repo and 
optimize --reorder.

I think an automatic version as a flag to optimize (as opposed to pull) 
would make most sense.
