Hello,

that's the sign that the darcs binary was compiled on linux with newer 
linux/glibc which provides epoll.h. If this is provided than GHC 
compiled on such system uses epoll_create/epoll_create1 function for its 
System.Event facility. If you compile darcs binary with such ghc on such 
system and move it to the system with older linux/glibc which does not 
provide epoll, then you will get exactly this error message.
At least I've got to this while upgrading lenny->testing and kept linux 
kernel from lenny...
