I'm afraid I can't be much help, except that this error seems to be the
key problem:

It's not one I recognise at all. I googled it and the only thing I found
were a few recent pastebin entries with it, suggesting that it's a new
problem others have been encountering with cabal and are asking about on
IRC.

Perhaps try asking on #haskell?
